Plantar fascia is the band of tissue at the bottom of your foot spanning from your heel to the ball of your foot. It allows our feet to absorb pressure and force when walking and standing. Inflammation of this fascia is a common and painful problem as we spend so much time on our feet. If untreated it can affect our gait, leading to problems in pain in other joints, including the knees, hips and spine. Our doctors will help you determine the cause, provide ergonomic advice related to shoes and movement and provide adjustments and therapies to move the inflammation out, to heal your pain and prevent recurrences.
As there are multiple factors that may contribute to plantar fasciitis. Icing and rest can help relieve the pain, but unfortunately, don’t address the root of the problem. Necessary treatment may include:
Ankle Adjustments: Misalignments in the ankle can cause the fascia of the foot to have to work harder to move the foot. Manipulation and realignment of the ankle joint may help improve function in the foot that’s inflamed.
Massage/Manual Therapy – Soft tissue massage along with trigger point therapy can release tension in the inflamed plantar fascia.
Exercises and stretching – We can show you specific exercises and stretches designed to relieve inflammation and elongate the tissue. Exercises to strengthen the lower leg can take the load of the feet/fascia.
Posture correction – Proper posture, which produces a normal gait when walking or running, is important. Correcting poor posture can alleviate some of the pressure off of your feet and plantar fascia.
Secondary conditions – Often patients who are suffering from foot pain compensate when walking or running, causing stress on the knee, ships or back. It is important to treat the whole body to get all affected joints functioning properly.
